A man has been found dead after a house fire in Tooting.

Fire fighters were called to Derinton Road at 4.42am, yesterday, Sunday October 2.

The fire ripped through the first floor of a terraced home and though fire fighters were able to bring the flames under control within an hour they sadly discovered the body of a 58-year-old man in a first floor bedroom.

A woman in her 50s had already left the property before the brigade arrived. She was later taken to a hospital in west London suffering from smoke inhalation.

A police spokeswoman said the Met were called by London Ambulance service workers just after 5am after the man was found unresponsive. He was declared dead at the scene.

At this stage the death is being treated as unexplained but the spokeswoman said that at this early stage it was not being considered suspicious.

Next of kin have been informed but the man has not been formally identified yet. A post-mortem is due to take place in due course.

Tooting MP Dr Rosena Allin-Khan tweeted: “Terribly sad to hear someone lost their life in a house fire on Derinton Road this morning. Thoughts are with his family at this time.”

In total 14 fire fighters were called to the scene and two fire engines. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
