A Team GB gold medallist dropped into a primary school to deliver a speech on how to achieve your goals.

Rower Tom Ransley spoke to pupils, including his niece and nephew who attend St Christopher's School, Epsom, about the work and training that culminated in his winning gold as part of the men’s coxed eight in Rio on Thursday September 22.

Headteacher, Annie Thackray said: “Although the youngest is three and the oldest is seven, there was complete silence.

"There was a real sense of awe and wonder in the hall as they heard his story and learnt about the effort required to become an Olympic champion so I think he was a true inspiration today.”

After an introduction the children watched a video of his triumphant day, waving small British flags and cheering when they saw Mr Ransley and his teammates come first and again when they saw him receive his gold medal on the podium.

The 31-year-old who also won bronze at London 2012 said: “Sport has given me a lot and it’s really nice to give back and help.

"London (2012 Olympics) was all about inspiring a generation and we’ve got something really special and it’s nice to share that.

"And you can see that the children are very enthused, so if that can help and get them involved in sport and out there and enjoy it, I think that’s a really valuable thing."
