Sutton Council is fighting to overturn a court ruling that it was partially responsible for devastating injuries suffered by a cyclist who fell from a bridge in Beddington Park.

Pensioner Christopher Edwards was left paralysed when he fell 1.5m onto rocks below, crushing his spine, after losing his footing on the 150-year-old bridge in 2011.

He sued the council, claiming there should have been warnings signs, and was awarded damages by the High Court in 2014.

The council this week confirmed it is appealing the ruling and the case is expected to be heard in October or November this year.

A spokesman said: “As this matter is ongoing it is not appropriate for the council to comment until receiving the court judgment.”
