You'll love this video of a Surbiton grandson surprising his Epsom nan with a recording of birthday wishes from the family.

Dave Goodings, a 22-year-old radio presenter, invited his grandmother Iris Howard, of Park Hill Road in Epsom, on a drive around the Ewell Village area on her 86th birthday and turned on what she thought was the radio.

After some music, a CD played the message: “Breaking news, please listen very very carefully… Iris Howard is celebrating her birthday. Commonly known for winning the best nan competition after 10 years in a row, the 86-year-old is often described as an incredible person and loved by all her family.”

Next, the CD played pre-recorded messages from Ms Howard’s friends and family wishing her a happy birthday, and recalling memories of their lives together. Mr Goodings said he was surprised when his grandmother began to cry.

Mr Goodings said: “I had just returned from holiday and had to edit it quickly. I didn’t have time to think about how she would react.”

Mr Goodings said he came up with the idea from his job working as a freelance radio presenter. He said it just “popped into his head” and that he had no idea it would be so popular.

The video he posted on his Facebook page reached more than 32 thousand views in five days, and then social media giant Unilad contacted him about publishing the video on its sites. The Unilad postings have collected more than seven million views.

Mr Goodings said: “I think this is a one-off thing really, but gets you thinking about what other surprises you can do for people and the reaction it can get. I can’t believe how well it went down with everyone. It’s been crazy.”
