Turning Tooting into a south London Disney Land is the aim of the Monster Raving Loony party candidate for this month's by-election.

Howling ‘Laud’ Alan Hope, who turns 74 on the day of the election, said he hopes to turn the constituency into the “Rootin’ Tootin’ Disney Land”, should he celebrate his birthday with an election win.

Mr Hope said “It would be a grand Disney Land. Everyone would be working and welcome and happy.”

The parliamentary hopeful, who was elected joint-leader of the party along with his cat Catmando in 2002, said the by-election triggered by Sadiq Khan becoming Mayor of London will be a lot of fun.

He added: “This one is going to be really high profile.

“Nigel Farage will be there, and Jeremy Corbyn; they will all be there.

“I could give myself a really good birthday present and become MP.”

Mr Hope shuns traditional door-to-door canvassing, and said he prefers to visit the constituency’s pubs to speak with the electorate.

He will be voting to leave the European Union, and said: “We want to become our own Humpty Dumpty and put ourselves back together again.”

He urged the people of Tooting to seize their chance to change the political landscape of Tooting, and said: “If you don’t usually vote, then vote unusually.

“For the first time ever in your constituency you can vote for the Monster Raving Loony party.

“Kick the politicians right where it hurts: in the ballot box.”

When asked about how knife crime in south London could be addressed, Mr Hope said it was not an issue he had put much thought into tackling.

He said: “You don’t want to be asking me, you want to be asking David Cameron or the police.”

The Monster Raving Loony highlighted that in a way, he was already an MP and always would be.

He said: “That’s right…a Mad Prat. Just like the rest of them.”
