The annual Sardine Festival took place this weekend in Surbiton, with sardine fans rewarded by sunshine and a large haul of freshly caught fish.

The festival celebrated Surbiton's ancient tradition of sardine fishing in the River Thames on Sunday, May 1, and marked the first weekend of the Surbiton Food Festival.

Since sardines were fictionally introduced back into the river in 2005 people return for a day of music, a parade and a BBQ in Claremont Gardens.

Maren tweeted: "Today is the day of famous Seething freshwater sardine festival where they will catch sardines in the Thames. I live in a funny place."

Francis Cade said: "Listening to sea shantys at a sardine festival in Surbiton."
