Chessington World of Adventures bosses are planning to revamp the resort in a series of building projects over the next 10 years.

A consultation has begun into a possible new roller coaster and 45 lodges for overnight stays. The master plan includes 10 new builds in all areas of the resort, parts of which are currently woodland.

Simon Burge, strategic development director, said in a letter to residents: “We are proud that Chessington World of Adventures resort forms an important part of the Kingston economy, and The purpose of the long term plan is to help us build on the resort’s existing strengths and enhance the facilities so that we can continue to attract visitors and deliver local economic benefits to the area.”

To pull in more visitors the resort could have an animal themed “headline” ride targeted at families, 45 lodges for overnight stays and more parking spaces.

Owner Merlin, who run the resort estimates £92.77m is brought to Kingston every year through the business, but developers concede potential problems of the plan could include effects on wildlife and trees, an increase in noise and more traffic levels in the surrounding roads.

Emma Hewson, a Surbiton resident for more than 20 years, said she has watched the resort expand in “utter dismay”.

She said: “The stunning and delicate bluebells and primroses have been decimated and wildlife disturbed. The adjoining field that Chessington also now own, which was previously used for grazing and runs directly behind the theme park, has been mown to accommodate a new car park.

“I only recently discovered the glorious open space and views that Winny Hill offers and the ancient woodland walks around Claygate Common, Chessington and Oxshott Heath.

“This little pocket of countryside is a precious resource which should be protected, not developed for profit.”

The consultation ends on May 9. Final plans will be submitted to Kingston Council by the end of July, with the consultation plans citing that by the end of September 2016 the council will have endorsed the plans.
