Flooding outside two schools in Furzedown has finally been resolved, nearly 20 years after the persistent flow of water started.

For nearly two decades, water has poured out of a manhole cover near Graveney School and Furzedown Primary, with parents and pupils having to dodge smelly water in summer and funky ice in winter.

Sadiq Khan, MP for Tooting, intervened and the flooding has stopped, much to the delight of parents in the area.

A student at Furzedown primary school, Iris Arvanitakis, said: “In the winter I slip over on the ice and in the summer the water smells, so I am really pleased it has now been repaired.”

According to Suzanne Ellis, a local resident and parent of a former Graveney student, who alerted the MP to the problem, said: “The area around the school where this water poured into the road was muddy and dangerous. After contacting my local MP, I am really pleased that something has finally been done to resolve it.

"It has been an eyesore afflicting the local community for such a long time.”

Mr Khan said: “The problem was a knotty one involving Graveney School, Thames Water and the Council but it is now finally resolved and it makes a big difference to that area which is used each day by hundreds of students.”
