Ground work will start in Tooting next week as Crossrail 2 engineers investigate the possibility of a station at Tooting Broadway.

In October, it was announced by Crossrail 2's managing director Michele Dix, that the preferred option was Balham, as ground conditions at Tooting meant the work would take longer and cost more.

March 8: More engineering works to examine potential of Crossrail 2 at Tooting Broadway

A consultation by TfL showed that more people preferred the original option of Tooting Broadway, despite the additional disruption.

From March 29, engineers will carry out additional works and will drill three boreholes, with the first one at Blackenham Road.

The second will be drilled at Graveney Road on April 5 and the final at Bickley Street on April 12.

Each borehole will take one to two weeks to drill.

Sadiq Khan, MP for Tooting, said: "It is important the residents know exactly what is happening on their streets and I would like to reassure them that TfL has committed to keeping disturbance to a minimum and to ensuring all appropriate safety measures are in place."

Mr Khan said he had been told there would not be any dust in the air as a result of the work.

Mr Khan, as well as Jane Ellison MP, the St George's Hospital Trust board, and Wandsworth Council, has maintained support for the Tooting Broadway option.

A spokesperson for Crossrail 2 said: "At this point, no decision on whether Crossrail 2 should interchange at Tooting Broadway or Balham has been made.

"These ground investigations are being undertaken to further our understanding of the ground conditions in Tooting Broadway."

Work will only take place between 8am and 6pm on weekdays and Saturday work, if needed, will take place between 8am and 1pm.

TfL has also confirmed that each worksite will be securely surrounded by temporary metal fencing and sheeting to minimise noise impact and that any excavated material will be kept within the site boundaries.

If residents have any concerns or questions about the drilling, they can call 0343 222 0055 or email crossrail2@tfl.gov.uk.
