A micro-brewery will be built and a riverside pub expanded after planning permission was granted on Thursday.

The William Morris pub in Merton Abbey Mills, Colliers Wood, will soon have a micro-brewery on site, with a new shop to sell beer brewed there, a remodelled riverside terrace, restaurant and outdoor dining area.

A micro-brewery typically produces small quantities of beer, usually for consumption on the premises where it is based.

April 2015: Could Colliers Wood become a beer brewing hub?

Merton Council's planning committee granted permission for the work to go ahead on Thursday evening at the council chambers in Morden.

It had been recommended for approval from officers.

There were seven objections from neighbours raising concerns there would be toxic and odorous fumes, noise from expansion of the facilities, the roof terrace, associated deliveries, brewing machinery and air conditioning.

There were concerns about storage of bins and waste management being unsightly, increased traffic from patrons and delivery vehicles, whether it would attract what they called undesirable clients and the proposed loss of trees.

According to the council's planning documents, there was one letter of support received from a local resident, which stated the view that the proposal would be a positive addition to the Merton Abbey Mills area helping to revive the precinct, which it said has recently struggled with empty units and declining number of market stalls.

Plans include using the back of the existing 1929 shop to house the restaurant, with a double-sided bar to serve both the terrace and the restaurant.

Documents show that outside, a permanent roof for the decked area will be built over the terrace so this area can be used throughout the year for additional seating.

The two buildings will be connected by an internal ‘boulevard’.

Residents have been assured the beer will not be brewed outside of 7am and 7pm Monday to Sunday.

Faucet Inn, which runs the William Morris pub, has been contacted for comment.
