The magical world of Hogwarts was brought to life at Hollymount Primary School for World Book Day celebrations.

Students in key stage two adopted a Harry Potter theme to celebrate the day while the rest of the school dressed up as their favourite book characters, writes Catherine Longworth.

Teaching staff also threw themselves into the celebrations by dressing up in costume.

ICT manager Maria Haplin said: “We had Harry Potters running around all over the place, it was hilarious. The whole day was great fun.”

Hollymount Primary School, in Cambridge Road, Raynes Park, organised an exciting day of activities to celebrate the day including a whole school parade in the playground.

The parade was followed by a school assembly where book tokens were awarded to students in each year group for best costume.

The literary theme continued in the afternoon as students partnered up in a buddy system with older students reading to the younger ones.

Schools and nurseries all over the country took part in the 19th World Book Day.

The annual literary celebration has been designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.

The main aim is to encourage children to explore the joys and pleasure of reading.
