Rose Hill roundabout has been revealed as the most dangerous junction for pedestrians in Sutton.

More people were injured crossing the junction over two years than at other in the borough, according to figures published by Transport for London (TFL.)

Six pedestrians were hurt at the roundabout between 2012 and 2014, the most recent statistics available.

One person was seriously injured, after walking into the road without using a designated crossing.

The figures prompted calls from politicians for safety improvements.

St Helier councillor Jean Crossby said: "The roundabout is known to be dangerous by everyone who uses it, and TfL need to listen to the council and the community if we are to make it safer."

TfL said it already planned improving the lane markings, resurfacing the road and introducing new signs at the roundabout later this year.

Nigel Hardy, TfL's head of sponsorship for surface transport, said the work would " make it easier and safer for drivers to navigate".

He added: "The roundabout contains safe pedestrian crossings points on all arms of the junction.

"We will continue to monitor safety at the site and investigate further changes if necessary."

But Coun Crossby said the upgrades would not go far enough.

The Rose Hill collision figures were obtained by London Labour as part of statistics about the capital's accident hotspots.

Fiona Twycross, Labour Londonwide Assembly Member, said: “It’s vitally important that this particular junction gets some attention and soon.

“With so many people using this key junction every day it’s alarming to see this number of accidents taking place."
