An unresponsive elderly woman was rescued by firefighters after neighbours heard her smoke alarm going off.

Concerned neighbours called the Fire Brigade at just after 8pm on Tuesday, February 2.

Firefighters found the woman in the living room of her smoke filled property in Eswyn Road, Tooting, after a pan was left unattended on the heat.

They managed to wake her and take her safety, before she was taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said: "The smoke alarms sounding and neighbours reacting to them helped save the woman's life.

"Everyone should have at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home and the safest option is have those linked together. This will give the earliest warning if there is a fire in your home.

“You should never leave cooking unattended – if you have to leave the room or the house, turn the heat off.”
