A cat has died and several fish have been rescued from a house fire in Morden today.

The occupant of the house on London Road had to lower himself out of the first floor window to escape the blaze before the fire services arrived.

The fire caused a fish tank in the property to leak, and the fish were rescued and placed into buckets of water. Unfortunately, a cat died during the fire.

The fire began in the living room after a sofa caught alight.

It caused smoke damage throughout the property, and fire damage to several furnishings.

The London Fire Brigade were called to the terraced house just after 9am this morning.

There were no smoke alarms in the property, which is located just a few hundred metres away from the Baitul Futuh Mosque, where a fire caused a huge level of devastation on September 26.

The fire was under control within around 20 minutes of the fire brigades arrival.

It was put out with one jet and breathing apparatus was used.
