A massive overhaul of how children’s services are delivered across Sutton has been proposed as the council announced its latest cost cutting measures.

Fourteen children’s centres are currently funded by Sutton Council, which is proposing to reduce the service to six “hubs” offering support services and four access points. The move would shave £727,000 from the annual budget.

The proposed plan would see a ratio of one centre for every 2,285 children in the borough.

Centres that will be closed under the proposal are the Grange, Beddington, Highview and Cheam library.

The Amy Johnson, Tweedale, Thomas Wall, Stanley Park, Green Oak and Victor Seymour centres would continue to deliver year-round children’s services as well as health, information and advice services from 9am to 5pm on Mondays to Fridays.

The four proposed access points would deliver one-off or planned sessions at the Muschamp, Spencer, Manor Park and Shanklin sites and would be open up to twice a week.

An eight-week consultation was launched on Monday on the plans, which would come into effect next year. The council has also warned some services could become paid-for, though has stated families on low incomes will be exempt.

Workshops will be held between October 12 and 22.

Wendy Mathys, chairwoman of the children, families and education committee, said: “Our children’s centres are a valuable community resource and it is with great regret that we are having to make these changes".
