A £3.5m revamp of five of the borough's leisure centres featuring upgraded fitness suites, changing rooms, saunas and steam rooms was completed last week.

The combined investment from Wandsworth Council and contractor People for Places Leisure (PfP) has improved lesiure centres in Putney, Balham, Tooting, Wandle and Latchmere.

Putney has an upgraded changing area and a new sauna in its health suite.

Balham leisure centre has an improved reception area, fully-refurbished wet changing village, bigger dance studio, new poolside sauna and new steam rooms.

Tooting has a new changing area with improved lockers and changing cubicles and upgraded sauna, steam rooms, fitness suite and spin studio.

The Wandle centre also has upgraded changing rooms, while Latchmere has an extended fitness suite, heightened security and fully-refurbished changing rooms with easy access to the swimming pool.

Councillor Jonathan Cook, deputy leader and cabinet member for community services, said he was proud to be among the first boroughs in the country to contract out the running of its leisure centres.

The council contributed about £2.5m to the revamp, while PfP put in about £1m.

Coun Cook said: "This investment is having the desired result.

"Wandsworth’s facilities are amongst the best used in the country with over 3.4 million visits per year."

The number of visitors across the five leisure centres increased from about 1.4m to 1.5m in the period of April to August in 2014 and 2015.
