A bedroom went up in flames last night after a faulty mobile phone charger reportedly set a duvet cover alight.

Fire officers were called to a house on fire in Rookstone Road, Tooting at about 1.30am.

The homeowners did not have a smoke alarm but were fortunately alerted by the smoke and were not injured, a fire officer said.

Fire was contained to the bedroom, which was completely destroyed in the blaze.

But firefighters had to cut through part of the roof to make sure the fire hadn't spread to the wooden supporting beams.

It took about 20 minutes for Wimbledon and Tooting fire officers to extinguish the blaze. They have since installed smoke alarms in the house.

A Tooting firefighter who was at the house said the fire was believed to have been caused by a faulty phone charger setting fire to bedding.
