Zac Goldsmith has again warned the Conservative party it would be "mad to underestimate" Jeremy Corbyn.

Conservative Hustings: Tory candidate for Mayor of London hits out at "aggressive lycra-clad brigade" of cyclists

The Richmond Park and North Kingston MP was speaking about the newly-elected Labour leader at a Tory mayoral candidate hustings in Wandsworth Town Hall last night.

Speaking about Mr Corbyn's quick rise to power, he said: "That shows he is good at mobilising people in large numbers.

"It would be mad to underestimate him."

His comments came after another Conservative candidate for mayor, Andrew Boff, said: "I had the absolute tickles when I found out that Jeremy Corbyn was leader of the Labour Party."

But Mr Boff, who is a London Assembley member and lives in Barking, admitted he was "envious" of the surge in new Labour voters since Mr Corbyn's election.

He said: "I am envious of the public engagement."

He added: "The subject matter I think they are being disingenuous but in London they now have a group of young people who have joined the Labour Party and will be banging on doors in streets next year and we have got to come up with an organisation that can compete with that.

"We have got to be better organised."

Syed Kamall MEP, who is also a Conservative candidate, said that it would take one "corruption scandal" in the Conservative Party for people to give their support to Mr Corbyn.

He also warned that being "complacent" about Mr Corbyn could "back fire".

Jeremy Corbyn was facing Prime Minister David Cameron for the first time in Prime Minister's Question Time this afternoon.
