Labour’s London mayoral candidate David Lammy perched on a soapbox and got a mic out to get the attention of busy traders and shoppers in Kingston this week.

The Tottenham MP took up residency in the Ancient Market Place on Monday afternoon to set out his campaign priorities which included affordable housing, more jobs and better high streets.

He suggested introducing a rent cap and asked passersby: “If you are renting in this city, how much did rents go up by in Kingston over the past two years? Twenty per cent and rising.”

His Labour competitors are Tooting MP Sadiq Khan, Hackney North and Stoke Newington MP Diane Abbott, Dulwich and West Norwood MP Tessa Jowell, Harrow West MP Gareth Thomas and transport journalist Christian Wolmar.

Later in the week new Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron was also on the campaign trail as he visited Kingston’s Banquet Records as part of the party’s fightback.

In his first official visit since being elected as the new party leader, Mr Farron met with newly elected Councillor John Tolley at his record shop on Wednesday afternoon to congratulate him.

He also took the chance to congratulate Councillor Rebekah Mole on her recent byelection success and bought a Kraftwerk album.

The Lib Dems have said 20,000 new members have joined the party, including nearly 4,000 from London, following the general election in May.
