A 62-year-old retiree who has set more than 80 world records in ten years is gearing up to smash even more this autumn.

Stephen Hyland, of Stoneleigh, has set more than 80 records for chin ups and pull ups since his 50s, but is set on getting his 90th record this autumn and early next year.

The pensioner has consistently beaten men half his age and has even appeared in hit TV challenge shows such as Ninja Warrior.

He has won records for most chin ups in 30 minutes, one hour, six hours and 12 hours and most pull ups in 30 minutes, six, 12 and 24 hours respectively.

Incredibly he has been able to achieve this despite shattering both his arms and shoulders and skull when a piece of metal landed on him when he was 21.

Mr Hyland first started training when he was 43 as part of his rehabilitation on his left shoulder and soon after became interested in training for competition game shows like Gladiators.

Despite failing to make the cut he continued to train until he felt he wanted to start breaking records to show those who rejected him from the show.

He said: "I phoned up Guinness World Records and asked 'what records have you got?'

"The the girl on the other end said knitting and craft work, with a dry sense of humour, which I like.

"But when it came down to it she said that there was a record that could be broken for pull ups and I thought why not go for it."

At 52 Stephen broke the number of pull ups in an hour record of 445 with 15 minutes to spare, setting a record of 512.

Ten years later he has gotten better with age and has more than doubled this record setting the benchmark at 1,050.

After a period Mr Hyland 18 months ago trying out free-running he is back into his training mentality and prepared to reclaim his records.

He said: "I'm going to thrash them.

"I'm well prepared and I've been training hard for the past few months so I'm confident I'm going to get the records back in the autumn.

"I'm going to wipe the floor with them."
