A tyre shop went up in flames last night after a suspected arson attack.

The blaze started in the Carshalton Road shop next to Mitcham Junction Station at about 10.30pm.

Five fire engines and about 25 firefighters were called to Part Worn Tyres and closed the road.

A Mitcham fire officer said: "There was lots of smoke and a fair bit of flame.

"There was a large stack of tyres and we had to gain access through some quite well-padlocked gates."

Once inside, it took about 45 minutes to extinguish the flames.

No-one was injured.

Stacks of rubber tyres and a wooden hut were damaged in the blaze.
