A woman in her 50s with suspected spinal injuries had to be cut out of her car and rushed to hospital after a head-on collision.

The accident, involving a blue Mercedes and a blue Volvo, happened at 8.45am yesterday on Cheam Road, Ewell, close to Ewell East station.

The woman was taken to St George's Hospital, in Tooting, while another man was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Watch Commander Gareth Arnold, of Epsom fire station, said: "There was a road traffic collision involving two cars.

"It was a head-on collision.

"There was a female in one of the cars who was suffering from suspected spinal injuries.

"We had to cut both doors off and the middle pillar and secured her onto a stretcher through the side of the vehicle."

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said it sent two ambulances to the crash.

He said: "A woman, aged in her 50s, was assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to St George’s Hospital with injuries including spinal pain.

"Another patient, a man, was able assessed at the scene but didn’t require hospital treatment."

Cheam Road was closed in both directions, but later reopened at 11am.
