A woman in her 80s has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car in Epsom town centre this morning.

The accident happened at 11.30am on Ashley Road, near the main traffic lights at the junction of the High Street close to Metro Bank.

A Surrey Police spokeswoman said the woman and a black Ford Fiesta had been involved in a collision and that a blue Mazda had also collided with the Ford Fiesta during the incident.

The woman was taken to St George’s Hospital, in Tooting, with serious injuries - believed to be to her head and legs.

"We were called to reports of a pedestrian being hit by a car - a woman believed to be in her 80s," a South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman added.

"The woman was assessed and treated for injuries including possible head and leg injuries before being taken to St George’s Hospital for further treatment."

Several roads remain closed while the emergency services attend the scene - including Church Street at the junction with the High Street.

The road closures are likely to be in place for the next few hours, according to police.

Ashley Road has now re-opened.

John Freeze, who owns Johnny Cash Pawnbrokers on the high street, said: "A woman was mowed down. It was very serious.

"It’s a major scene up there."
