Parents have been told to find a new arrangements for their children after a Carshalton nursery said it would close at the end of July.

Elmwood Nursery, based at Carshalton College, will close its doors on Friday, July 31, forcing parents to find another nursery for their children within two months.

The nursery was rated 'Good' by Ofsted in its last inspection in 2013 and staff were said to be providing children with a good opportunity to develop.

But in a letter sent out to parents on Wednesday, June 3, Carshalton College's deputy principal Robin Greenaway said the nursery cost the college £70,000 a year and that they "do not feel the College can justify a subsidy."

Parents have expressed worry they will have little time to find a replacement nursery for their children.

Nicola Wearing from Carshalton, whose son attends the nursery, said: "I'm angry that the college has given us such little time to find a new nursery for our children.

"The nursery is excellent and my boy has really bonded with the staff and other children there and now he will be torn away from the bonds he has made.

"There are not many other nurseries in the area and if I do find a place it will be a long way out from my way to work."

A spokeswoman for the college said: "The education sector is facing further cuts in funding for adult students and has to absorb greater expenditure for staff pensions.

"The nursery has been running at a loss for some time and the college is reviewing the sustainability of all its non-teaching provision to ensure our focus is on the  core business of education and training for the local community.

"We realise that this would cause concern and inconvenience to parents and are making efforts to identify availability with other local providers to help ameliorate this issue.

"We are meeting parents on Wednesday June 10 to answer any questions and assist in any way we can."

Update: A petition calling on Carshalton College to keep the nursery running has been submitted to change.org. To sign the petition click here.
