Armed police equipped with guns and riot shields descended on Plough Lane in Wallington today.
Officers were called out after receiving a report that a man was making threats to harm himself and came prepared.
One witness said: "I was coming back from the shops at the Plough Area.
"I saw two large police cars, 4x4 types, and the police was getting out the cars and they was holding large guns and shields.
"They then ran up towards a house.
"This was Rookwood Avenue in Wallington."
Following the incident a man in his 50s was detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to a south London hospital.
