A busy route through town which was shut off after a sewer collapsed, has now been reopened following the completion of repair work.

St Nicholas Way in Sutton town centre partially subsided, after a leaking water pipe softened soil beneath the road surface.

The tarmac collapsed shortly before 2pm on Wednesday, October 8.

The route was shut off at the junction with Cheam Road, causing lengthy journeys home for motorists and bus commuters.

Since Thursday, October 9, traffic flowing down St Nicholas Way was diverted left down West Street, just before approaching Empire Cinemas.

Sutton Council’s highways engineers completed repair work yesterday morning, which they report was two days ahead of schedule.

A 20mph speed limit is in place to protect the new road surface.
