A cyclist who was hit by a bus in Richmond remains in hospital a month after the accident.

The 21-year-old was hit near Richmond Bridge, at the junction with Hill Street, at about 8.45pm on September 7.

London Ambulance Service sent a single responder by car, two ambulance crews, a duty officer and a medical team from London’s Air Ambulance by car.

The cyclist was treated for a head injury and taken to St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, as a priority.

He remained in hospital in a critical condition for some time after the accident, but police confirmed this week the man has now been moved from the intensive therapy unit (ITU) to the major trauma unit and is conscious and breathing.

Tim Lennon, from Richmond Cycling Campaign (RCC), said: "We are very shocked to hear that someone has been in serious hospital care for this long and it does bring to mind a recent statistic that cyclists in London are more at risk from buses than HGVs.

"Cycling is still a very safe thing to do but when you do have incidents like this, it shows how a nasty it can get very quickly.

"It [Richmond Bridge] is a junction with a problem because there is lots of traffic going through there and going through very quickly and it is a key crossing to avoid the A316. The council have looked at this before and Councillor Stephen Speak has given some thought about it."

A witness, who asked not to be named, said the cyclist stopped breathing at one point prior to the ambulance arriving, with a member of the public giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

The witness said he believed the cyclist was not wearing a helmet, but Mr Lennon argued wearing a helmet on this occasion would not have made a difference to the cyclists injuries.

He said: "We [RCC] think there needs to be a much safer way for people to cycle around the borough and at junctions like this.

"The council are talking about trying to help more children cycle to school but you have significant traffic going across Richmond Bridge so you are never going to get that happen."

The collision is being investigated by the Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Merton.
