An MP has demanded two south London train operators improve their "maddening" service.

Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake has pushed train operators to improve after a Which? magazine survey showed out of the country's 20 rail operators, Southern and First Capital Connect are ranked 13th and 18th respectively.

They both only scored two out of five in terms of punctuality and First Capital Connect only scored two out of five for reliability.

Mr Brake said: "As more and more people like me decide to leave their cars at home and take the train to work, it becomes essential that train companies justify that commuter decision.

"Commuters are being let down greatly, in more ways than one, by the major train companies that serve Sutton. Urgent improvements must be made."

Which? also looked at ticket machines and branded some of them a "maddening waste of time".

Mr Brake added: "It is worrying that decisions are being made to replace staff in ticket offices with ticket machines.

"Like many others, I have often found myself left frustrated by inflexible or confusing ticket machines or greeted by an ‘out of order’ sign."
