A reverend has been recognised for his services to Merton's business community.

Reverend Andrew Wakefield was presented with a Compact Award on November 6 for his involvement with Merton Chamber of Commerce since its foundation 20 years ago.

The national Compact Leadership award acknowledged Mr Wakefield's personal role after taking over as chairman in 1999.

Mr Wakefield was also singled out for praise for his roles within Merton Council and Merton Volunteer Service Council.

Nick Hurd MP, minister for civil society, said: "The winners show just how much can be achieved when people work well in partnership and I would like to congratulate all the winners and shortlisted entrants, and encourage others to look to their impressive example."

Mr Wakefield thanked Merton Council and Merton Chamber of Commerce for their support.

He tweeted: "Very proud to win National Compact award for leadership and very proud with the certificate and trophy.

"It's lovely to have won, but I'm even more proud to have been nominated by Merton colleagues who I respect."
