Sutton & Epsom’s return to London One South has so far been a good one, but head coach Jeff Parsons knows it could have been a great one.

Sutton have won three of their five games but, bar a late mistake against Sidcup and some poor decision making against Wimbledon on Saturday, Parsons can’t help thinking his side could be top of the pile with a 100 per cent record.

“We are happy with the start,” he said.

“But it was disappointing that we probably should have won on Saturday and we could have beaten Sidcup, but for a simple mistake from nothing at the very end.

“So it is a little upsetting we haven’t won all five but at the end of last season we would have taken three wins from five at the start of this campaign.

“You always want more, but being realistic I think three wins from five is pretty good.”

Missing captain Matt Whitaker, who was at his best friend’s wedding, and kicker Sam Hurley to a shoulder injury, Sutton were narrowly beaten 10-8 by Wimbledon but passed up chances to kick penalties to try for tries.

“There were some wrong decisions which were made on the pitch,” added Parsons.

“We didn’t have Matt and maybe a few of those decisions would have been made differently if he was there.

“We lost our first choice goalkicker in Sam as well so maybe that was in the back of their minds.

“It was a very low scoring game, but we had the majority of possession and we couldn’t quite get the tries.”

Fly-half Chris Hitchcock scored a try and kicked a penalty for Sutton’s points.
This Saturday, they go to Havant who, after starting with four defeats, beat Beckenham 35-13 last weekend.

“We are coming into a difficult run of tough games now,” said Parsons.

“I used to play against Havant all the time and it is not a nice place to go, they have a lot of supporters and are always very physical.”
