The Conservatives were celebrating tonight as they retained their seat in the Weybridge South.

Richard Knight, Conservative candidate, with 274 votes, beat the Liberal Democrats, who were second with 150 votes, and UKIP in third with 140 votes.

The byelection took place due to the resignation of Simon Dodsworth last month.

Weybridge South has a total electorate of 3,287 and in the May 2012 election, there was a turn out of 28.1 per cent.

This year's turn out of 17.2 per cent was the lowest in borough history.

The winning candidate said: "It is quite humbling to be honest. There have been a lot of people out there working for me. It has been a learning curve and fantastic to find streets I didn't know existed and meeting people.

"It is only nine months and I have a steep leaning curve and it will be fascinating to see how the council works."

Polls opened at 7am this morning, Thursday, July 25, and closed at 10pm, with the count held at the civic centre in Esher.
