Croydon Amphibian Tor Wheeler smashed two long-standing borough records at the Croydon Swimming Association Championships last month.

The 17-year-old won the Jim Moore Memorial Trophy by winning the 100m backstroke in one minute, 1.27 seconds, beating the old record of 1:02.68 set in 1991.

He then also won The Rex Aqua Challenge Cup by breaking the 31-year-old 200m backstroke record. The previous time of 2:11.90, from 1982, was beaten by club captain Wheeler with a swim of 2:11.32.

Meanwhile. Amphibians swimmers had a fantastic day at Crystal Palace for the London Swimming Sprints meeting on July 14, with a medal haul of five gold, nine silver and eight bronze medals.

Particular mentions must go to Dennis Cousins, Alex Isidoro, Finn Slattery, James Simms and club newcomer Grace Ockwell for good swims, while many swimmers smashed personal bests.

James Simms and Harry Minchella Cochrane, both aged 15, came in in under 26 seconds for the 50m free, and are on track to meet national qualification in the 2013/14 swimming season.
