A selective Kingston school has opened a consultation on expansion that could see 150 more places by September 2019.

Trustees and governors of Tiffin School said the Queen Elizabeth Road site could gain one more year 7 class.

Headteacher Hilda Clarke said: “We want to expand, but the site is quite small.

"We want to open the door and give more people access to the high education standards at Tiffin School.

“We have done this consultation when there is a huge public view on our school.

“It is really important that people know about this.”

The expansion would increase its five forms of entry to six by September 2015.

If the consultation backs the expansion proposals it will initially lead to space for 30 more boys at the school by September 2015.

But this will mean 150 additional students will be slotted into years 7 to 11 by September 2019.

The school will be hosting an open day on July 9, which is during the consultation period and is due to end at noon on Monday, July 22.

The consultation suggests a new building with study space and a dining room, already granted planning permission by Kingston Council.

Money is in place for phase one of the new building.

Primary schoolchildren currently in year 4 could be the first beneficiaries.

Earlier this year Tiffin School for Girls began a consultation on introducing a catchment area for the first time, giving priority to applicants living in south-west London and north Surrey, stretching between Ealing to Epsom and Walton to Mitcham.

But Miss Clarke said: “What we want to do is be able to serve an area that does not have the general grammar provision.

“We should not really be having people who are in areas who already have grammar school provision.

"We are not saying we want more space for people from 30 miles away."

She said that if the idea of a catchment area was put forward by parents there would be a further consultation.

Last year 1,685 students sat the 11-plus test for a place at the school despite there only being 140 places up for grabs.
