A young child was stranded on a bus after a mother got off due to a lack of funds on her Oyster Card.

Passers-by were shocked to see the frantic woman screaming after the double decker last night as it drove off from the bus stop outside Centre Court Shopping Centre, Wimbledon.

TfL’s diirector of operations London Buses Mike Weston said the mother and child boarded the route 131 bus along with a number of other passengers.

He said: "The mother had insufficient credit on her Oyster card and got back off the bus, however we believe the child remained on board.

"The driver was not aware that an unaccompanied child was on board and drove a short distance away from the bus stop.

"The driver stopped the bus immediately when they were made aware of the situation and then mother and child were quickly reunited."

Twitter user @daysofspeed tweeted about the incident which took place at about 7.30pm.

He said "I just heard her in obvious distress calling out about the bus, looked like member of public consoling her.

"Bus 200 was flagged down, maybe to contact driver of different bus. Lots of help from public.

"She was - understandably - very distressed but calmed when I assume driver said he'd made contact."
