Hopes of getting a night bus in Carshaton and Wallington have been quashed after Transport for London branded the service not worthwhile.

The area has been without a night bus since 2009 when the N213 was axed. More than 5,000 people have signed a petition calling for a night bus linking Sutton and Croydon and it was hoped a review of the 154 service would result in its hours being extended.

But, in an email seen by the Guardian, TfL has dismissed the idea. Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake, who has campaigned for the reinstatement of a night service for revellers and night workers, said the decision is extremely disappointing.

The email from TfL to Tom Brake says: "A later service and a full night service on the route were both tested and found to be not worthwhile using a full cost-to-benefit appraisal process."

It says the route will be reviewed again in 2014.

Mr Brake said: "This is desperately disappointing, 5000 people signed the petition calling on Boris Johnson to reintroduce the night bus, but time after time Boris has failed to listen to the needs of local people. The Mayor needs to cater for the needs of all of London not just inner London."
