Catherine Tate could replace David Tennant as the Doctor, according to the Daily Mail.

An article in today's issue of the newspaper said writers may make the actress from Mortlake the first female Time Lady in Dr Who.

The speculation comes before tonight's finale of the latest series of the popular BBC1 cult series, which is expected to attract more than 10m viewers.

Many viewers believe David Tennant's character will be killed off and have thought up a host of scenarios which could happen in the programme, one of them being that his sidekick Donna will become the new Doctor.

But others think it is her who will be killed off.

There is also a theory that the Doctor will regenerate into two doctors, both played by Tennant.

Other people have put Robert Carlyle, Jason Statham or Alan Davies in the frame for becoming the new Doctor.
