Landlord finds property had been used for drugs
 |
| Cannabis plants |
A cannabis factory was uncovered in New Malden last week, when a landlord found his tenant using a rented house to manufacture the drug.
Hao Tran Khanah, 27, was later arrested and charged with the production of cannabis. He pleaded guilty to the charge at Kingston Magistrates' Court on Saturday, and was remanded in custody to await sentencing.
Merton police said the operation was discovered when the landlord saw a television programme on cannabis factories and became suspicious his property in Byron Avenue, near Raynes Park, was being used to grow the plant.
The landlord visited his house last Wednesday and found no occupants but an extensive cannabis producing operation.
A police spokesman said that a downstairs living room and three upstairs bedrooms had been "completely full" with the plants.
The landlord reported his discovery and Hao was arrested the following day. The date of his sentencing has not yet been decided.
The arrest came in the middle of Tackling Drugs Week, a campaign jointly run by Merton police and Merton Council.
The project aimed to reduce drug crime and inform addicts about ways to get support and treatment.
Council member Tariq Ahmed said: "Merton is consistently amongst the safest boroughs in London but drug dealing and drug dependency are still among the main causes of crime across the city.
"It is vital we work proactively with the police and the drug agencies in their work to stop the producers and the dealers and help the addicts so they can come off drugs for good, and make a positive contribution to society in the future."

For every one of these operations shut down, i wonder how many new ones are established?
This drug whilst in the hands of criminals our children will be able purchase it freely with no age limits. If responsible law abiding adults choose to use cannabis then i dont care but stop the criminals from making money and taking advantage of our children.
We need either a controlled environment where adults can purchase cannabis free from the criminal element.
When will Brown and MsSmith realise that classifcation dont make a blind difference to our kids, they do want they want so its up to us to take cannabis out of their reach and that is only achievable through a controlled and regulated system, anything else is just being naive and will prove to be useless.
Alcohol prohibition and the mafia springs to mind everytime i read stories like this.
