Community comes to disabled woman's aid
 |
| Moving day: Sylvia Hoadly with her friend Debbie |
The Merton community has come to the rescue of a seriously disabled woman who was denied help moving to a new council property less than a mile from her current home.
Offers of help flooded in to the Wimbledon Guardian after we reported how Sylvia Hoadly was told to move by herself despite struggling to walk, suffering from severe osteoathritis, and unable to afford the cost of removal.
But local charity, the Wimbledon Guild, offered to foot the bill after Merton's social services said it would not help.
Several readers also pledged cash and on Tuesday, Funnells Removals in Mitcham stepped in at short notice to move Ms Hoadly's belongings from Brenley Close at a discounted rate.
The 56-year-old said: "It's just wonderful. This has been such a stressful time and I've barely able to sleep at night so this is a huge weight off my mind.
"I'm just so grateful that someone has come to the rescue - I don't know what I would have done otherwise."

Merton's director of housing, Simon Williams, claimed the council recognised it had a duty of care with residents who are elderly or have special needs but could only advise Ms Hoadly to apply for a Department of Social Security grant or loan to help her move.
When a trustee of the Wimbledon Guild heard of Ms Hoadly's plight she contacted the charity which immediately promised to help.
Russell Humphreys, chief executive of Wimbledon Guild of Social Welfare, said: "We're the largest charity to cover the whole of Merton and we've been helping people in difficult situations like Ms Hoadly by giving small grants for 100 years.
"All the money that we give out comes from donations given to us and none of that goes to administration costs but straight into our welfare fund."
