Furious fire fighters were called to a house to find an apparently drunk man had shut himself in the toilet.

A crew from Battersea arrived at the Leathwaite Road home in the early hours of Wednesday, May 14, where the man had been trapped for an hour-and-a-half.

His friend had been unable to release him, despite evidence of several marks on the door from where it had been kicked.

But the crew quickly released the man using a simple option that had not yet been explored - inserting a screwdriver into the lock.

Fire fighter David Waterman said: "It was the kind of lock you get in public toilets which can be easily opened from the outside using a coin or a flat bladed screwdriver.

"I thought the friend would have already tried that and the lock had broken, but we tried it and sure enough it worked."

I would only consider calling 999 as an absolute last resort.

What these people need is a 24hour handyman, or perhaps a carer.

Or Rehab......

Or perhaps an £80 fixed penalty for being a nuisance, or put up in front of a magistrate (no wait! That would be pointless).

All too common nowadays, it seems - As a reader of Tom Reynolds' blog (Random Acts of Reality - http://randomreality

){Ambulance rather than Firefighter} - It seems some public education is required - Perhaps we should lobby the BBC?

In the 1990s, my local fire service used to charge (around £50 as I recall) for non-emergency call-outs, such as these. It seemed a little steep at the time; but around the same price as a calling out locksmith. This, coupled with the fact that at least two crew and a fire engine were otherwise unavailable for fire-fighting did make people think twice and ask "is my call really necessary?"
