Dons facing transfer competition
 |
| Player search: Dons boss Terry Brown Deadlinepix Paul Tanner SP15335 |
Dons boss Terry Brown fears one of only three teams to do the double over them this season could trump him in the summer transfer market.
The Kingsmeadow manager, who overcame his play-off hoodoo to lead AFC Wimbledon in to the Blue Square South next season, is hunting a new spine to his side after slashing his squad by eight.
Promotion hero Mark DeBolla, Richard Jolly, Karl Beckford, Mark Beard, Rob Quinn, Will Salmon, Steven Ferguson and Daniel Webb all headed for the exit door last week.
Brown is after central defenders, midfielders and strikers in their early 20s as he bids to mastermind a team capable of reaching the Blue Square Premier and beyond.
But he has revealed the Dons are not the only ones flexing their financial muscle as they prepare for the coming campaign, which means fresh blood may be tricky to come by.
"It is not difficult to sell this club to potential signings but we are probably challenging for the same players as Chelmsford City," he said.
"I have spoken to five players already and I would like to think we will have some progress with new signings before the end of the week.
"But every player I speak to has been approached by Chelmsford, who are a well run and well supported club like ourselves. Even Havant & Waterlooville are spending the money from their cup run.
"It means things are dragging out a little bit. Chelmsford will be a threat to us this year."
Brown has cleared the decks of dead wood and vowed to replace them with fresh faces able to compete in the Blue Square Premier as part-timers.
"I am more interested in building a team for the future now," he added.

I think the 'dead wood' statement is a bit uncalled for. As an AFC supporter having watched all home and a lot of away games Ferguson, Beard, Webb Quinn & De Bolla all played a significant part in the club getting promotion, and a lot of supporters will be sad to see them go.

As for the continued reference to young players and building for the future - am I the only one who thinks we ditched experience
