Gipsy Hill man criticises investigation to catch burglars

A Gipsy Hill businessman who was beaten by burglars has criticised the police investigation to catch his attackers.

Simon Pither, who suffered serious head injuries in the attack, says police have not carried out analysis on DNA samples because of a lack of funds.

The 36-year-old IT consultant was beaten after he disturbed a gang of burglars at his £300,000 home.

The married dad-of-two says doctors told him he was lucky to be alive after suffering serious skull injuries.

After the attack in January police took samples of DNA from under his finger nails.

“The world is run by budgets. It is outrageous and disgraceful.”

But Mr Pither says two month after the attack an officer explained to his sister-in-law the samples had not been returned because of a lack of money to pay for the analysis.

The former martial arts instructor told The Mail on Sunday: "The world is run by budgets. It is outrageous and disgraceful."

He described his attackers as three black men aged between 17 and 25 and said they stole a camera, an iPod, a watch and some memory sticks.

The Met denied financial considerations had played a part in the investigation.

Scotland Yard said in a statement: "We are currently awaiting the results from the laboratory relating the forensic and DNA opportunities that have been taken from the premises as a result of the offence.

"Financial considerations have never had any influence on the way this case has been handled."
