Herne Hill man missing on Africa gap year
 |
| Fears: Aydan Savaskan |
A Herne Hill family face an anguished wait for news of their son who disappeared during a gap year trip to Africa.
Aydan Savaskan, from Dorchester Court, was due to return home last week from a six-month trip to Kenya.
But his family have not heard from him since his last email which he sent from Benin, West Africa, on February 3.
The 20-year-old had been working in a Nairobi orphanage as part of the Global Volunteer Network.
He then left the programme to travel with his friends.
It is thought he may have passed through Kenya, Ethiopia, Togo and then Benin.
Aydan's dad, Sinan, described him as a sensible man and that he did not seem depressed in his last messages.
He explained a number of Aydan's friends were looking for him in Africa.
A Met spokesman said: "We are growing increasingly concerned for Aydan and investigations to his disappearance suggest that he may have been travelling across Africa and beyond, perhaps passing through countries including Kenya, Ethiopia, Togo across to Benin.
"His last known email correspondence on February 3 said he was staying in Benin, West Africa.
"There is nothing to suggest he is a fantasist with regards to the 3,000 mile journey he claimed in correspondence to have travelled.
"Aydan's family say that it is not in character for him to not stay in touch.
We do not know where he is now and any information would be treated in confidence."
Aydan is described as white with a tanned complexion, having short dark brown hair and a slim build. He is between 5ft 8in and 5ft 9in.
Anyone with information should call police on 020 8721 3557 or the National Missing Persons hotline on 0500 700 700.
