Halloween ghouls and goblins are marauding Croydon Indoor Market... selling sandwiches? Independent theatre group Breakfast Cat Theatre Company is presenting a kooky comedy double-bill over the Halloween season at the aptly named Scream Lounge, South End.
Roberto Prestoni, writer, director and actor, is bringing two short plays Yeah This House is Haunted and Hammer Sandwich to the small venue.
Both are set in Prestoni’s home town of Croydon and, while outwardly about things that go bump in the night, they are very much a tribute to the town.
Prestoni says: “Yes, Hammer Sandwich is about Dracula and mummies but really it is about Croydon.
"We are very pro-Croydon and we have got a lot of love for our town.”
The group back up their words with actions.
Any profits from the three performances will be split between the Croydon Recovery Fund, helping people displaced by the August riots, and helping small business the TV Shop, on Cherry Orchard Road, which was looted for five hours.
Prestoni says: “The riots were heart-breaking. We haven’t worked out exactly how any profits will be divided, but we wanted to help in any way we could.”
Squeezed into the Scream Lounge, the audience will almost feel part of the show and this is exactly how 35-year-old Prestoni likes it.
He says: “You should be able to smell the actor’s armpits. I have performed in places like the Ashcroft at Fairfields and, while there is a buzz to looking out across a sea of faces, I love the closeness of smaller venues.”
Breakfast Cat Theatre Company, the Scream Lounge, South End, Croydon, October 31 to November 2, shows start 8pm, £4, visit ticketweb.co.uk.
