Tom Holland has been cast as the new Spider-Man for a film due to be released in July 2017.

But apparently some people don’t know much about 19-year-old Tom.

Want to get to know him? Here’s some key information.

1. He cut his acting teeth playing Billy Elliot on the West End stage

That’s him on the right, meeting Gordon Brown when he was 13 along with the other Billys. Holland was scouted at a performance with his dance school, and spent two years training before taking on the title role in 2008. Sir Elton John said he was “blown away” by Tom as aspiring dancer Billy.

2. He’s British

Tom was reportedly one of six teenage actors being considered for the role, three of whom were British. Like his predecessor, ex-Spidey Andrew Garfield, he has a British accent which he’ll need to switch to American for the role of Peter Parker.

3. The next Spider-Man film is due for 2017, but we’ll likely see him before that

The 19-year-old may have a cameo role in Marvel’s Captain America sequel, Civil War, after the deal struck between Sony and Marvel to continue the franchise. The agreement means Spider-Man can interact with other characters in the Marvel Universe.

4. We last saw him in Wolf Hall

He played Gregory Cromwell (son of Thomas) in the BBC adaptation of the Hilary Mantel novel.

5. Stunt work? Tom has the skills

Leaping from building to building? No problem for Tom, who likes to keep his gymnastic skills fresh.

6. He’s critically acclaimed for his role in The Impossible

He starred in 2012 film The Impossible with Ewan MacGregor and Naomi Watts, and everyone had very good things to say about his acting skills. Ewan and Naomi loved working with him, and he received rave reviews – according to the New York Times: “He is a terrific young actor.”

7. His father has written a book about him

From 2011-2012, Tom’s father – comedian Dominic Holland – wrote a weekly blog about how a “somewhat famous comedian is being outshone by his more illustrious son”.

As Tom has become ever more famous, the blog has become a book How Tom Holland Eclipsed His Dad, which received pretty positive reviews.
