Cold reception for The Men From Uncool
 |
| Real promise: Prediction |
First to brave the RockStock stage on the night of RockStock's fourth birthday was Room 253, the first solo act to perform at RockStock. Room 253, otherwise known as Gordon Shepard, mixes live music with loops and samples from an Apple laptop, with Gordon himself alternating between acoustic and electric guitars, synth work and keyboard. He pulled off a blinding set to begin the night, and did it alone, which to me makes him a courageous person.
Second up to perform were The Men From Uncool, a punk trio. While they had the right sound in theory, they may have needed a little more practice, as they were received coldly by the crowd, and had real trouble getting them to take part in their set. They tried in earnest to interest the crowd, but with no results, as they were the least applauded of the night.
Third to climb onstage were Prediction, a hardcore screamo quintet with an ever-growing local fan base. They were battling illness, but they didn't let this impede their performance, as they jumped, headbanged and spun their ways into the hearts' of the crowd, who were going crazy for everything Prediction were throwing at them. Feeding off the energy of the crowd, the band became more and more crazy, until you could see the glow of energy radiating from them. And then the crowd took the mood higher still, as they moshed as if their lives depended on it. Easily the best performance of the night, and one that proved Prediction have real promise, and could easily make it big.
| "Second to last to play were Robotic Demolition, a band with a shared vocal line up. They headed into their first song with all guns blazing, and handled the crowd well. As they continued, members of the crowd began to hurl abuse at them, which they handled well, and they pulled their set together at the end, with a cover of Oasis’ Wonderwall." | | Megan Munro |
|
Fourth to face the temperamental crowd were The Awakened. They were introduced as a band that, even though they have played many bigger, posher venues, still likes to return to RockStock to play for the crowd there. Throughout their set, they battled with the crowd, trying to incite pits at every opportunity, eventually succeeding later in the set. Their experience showed through, as they dealt with guitar problems and a tough crowd with confidence only possible for a band that isn't new to live performance.

As they continued, members of the crowd began to hurl abuse at them, which they handled well, and they pulled their set together at the end, with a cover of Oasis' Wonderwall.
Headliners of the night were Flaming Monkeys, playing a new line-up, complete with Xenon front man Jimmy Robinson on guitar and backing vocals. As the headliners, they had the crowd enchanted as they played, and they looked as though they were really having fun, which is always a good thing. As they confidently charged through song after song, they bantered with the crowd and had some real fun, before ending the set with a cover of Led Zeppelin's Rock and Roll. They were a great end to a great night of rock.

my review...
room 253 completely spot on. It takes alot of guts to stand up and do it yourself, very likeable and entertaining.
The men from uncool, punk? I think not, although there were some punky elements, sounded like grunge pop rock and roll to me. I liked their onstage banter and it was a shame that their drums kept falling apart, i predict these lot to get better with more live shows, they're not innovators, but i cant think of anyone else who sounds like them.
prediction - very energetic and charismatic live performers. The crowd who were obviously theirs loved them and it showed, loads of moshing. big things indeed. my only gripe is they were a bit too samey, I say that because i wasn't a fan of their stylings and have zero knowledge about hardcore screamo and I feel fine with that.
The awakening were fantastic, love their songs and style and I thought they did really well to win over predictions crowd. I can easily see the awakened making the bigtime.
Robotic demolition i think also will build on their performance and get better with time. Again it took some front to pull out a wonderwall cover considering it's not even a rocky number by oasis standards.
flaming monkeys/arctic monkeys maybe I should start a band and call it retarded monkeys!
But these guys I found a bit hit and miss, we all know our rock roots, but why does everyone insist on cracking out led zep covers? I'd stick to ratm, audioslave and tool if I wanted that!
they had good swagger and will get better, but again not 100 % my thing.
all in all a good night with loads of potential for room 253, uncool and awakened. roll on the next rockstock.

SORRY
I forgot to say that I'd like to thank the bands that played. we have no right to critise, because if we could do better we'd be on that stage doing it! Don't let the review dishearten any of you, critics are paid to critise, if they didn't they wouldn't be doing their job, they can't rave on about how great everything always is!
Having taken the stage a few times a while back I can tell you it's nerve racking, but with experience the confidence will come and hopefully this and continued rockstocks will go someway to making Croydon's band scene even better.
It annoys me big time that when bands play, they get opened up to this abuse, yes some may suck or not be to your liking, but even if they aren't the fact that it means alot to be on the stage for those bands and live out the dream, albeit briefly, doesn't give anyone the right to abuse, [bold]it should be encouraged and applauded at every opportunity.[/bold]

in my defence, i could have been a lot harsher about this performance. and had you spoken to Gordon Shepard (room 253) you would know that i personally went to find him afterwards and say how brave i thought he was for going up there alone.
its really not cool of you to do this. i work hard on these reviews, and i try and be truthful, without being mean. sorry if i dont meet your standards, but it was how i felt the night went.
i never actually said any of the bands were bad guys, i simply said they needed a bit more practice, or that the audience were heckling .... WHICH THEY WERE!
i was sitting in the seats, as i needed to make notes, along with my friend. had you been there, you would have heard the back row of people literally sceaming during every lull in the music.
[bold]PlEASE CHECK YOUR FACTS BEFORE YOU SAY MY REVIEW IS INCORRECT.[/bold]

firstly to Robo if it's true I'm sorry to hear that you got stick from the monkeys. bands may not like each others tastes or musical opinions (something I've learned the hard way that you can't force on people as much as we'd all like to) but for the sake of the scene we all need to be united. If every band is at each others throats the concept of community events is rendered void, surely it's better to have people wanting to do shows with each other than not.
To megan, you don't need to justify yourself at all. these comment sections should be for feedback and opinions, not verbal bashing if things don't go someone's way, so I'm sorry if it happens. what constitutes a great show for one person may not meet the same criteria as another persons.
Take me for example, I felt the need to chip in with my 2 cents because I felt slightly differently to you about some of the bands. it's an old saying of sorts, but the world would be a boring place if we were all the same. carry on writing.

It was all quite mixed at the this gig for me. Im Lampy (the guy who lights rockstock everyweek)
Reading through the comments about Robotic Demolition are really quite mixed. Fair play in them being able to defend themself, but im in very much agreement with this review that some practise in stage presence and live performing ability. My honest opinion, it seemed almost karaoke, which was a shame.

FFS
please stop having a go at me.
i wrote what happened.
im not saying the people at the front were hurling abuse.
the people in the seats were screaming at the band.
and basically, i would appreciate it if you guys would all just leave my review alone, because i have already said that i try really hard on these, and this is actually my ticket to a job and uni course.
i dont see you guys getting promises of employment from music magazines when your 18.
had i been really harsh about robotic demolition, i would have said how they couldnt remember the lyrics to their own songs and had them on pieces of paper.
sorry to the guys in the band, i like you all, but i dont want you guys' friends coming on here and insulting me and my reviews.
please ask them to stop.
its not fair at all.

Hey, guitarist of the awakened here. I too wanted to echo my comrades toms thoughts.
Thanks for the cool review megan it's cool for bands who play to get any kind of feedback good or bad, or you'll never improve.
Also wanna say thanks to frank, he seems to know what he's talkin about too!
at the end of the night we had fun and made a few new friends, the bands we played with were great and that's what music and nights out with people should be about!
We'll be playing again 1st Feb 08 so hope we see you all then, again! Until then have a great Xmas and wicked new Years.
Love me, and The Awakened.

Just reading what has been going on here, i find it realy funny. I do not know any of the bands on this review, and i have not heard any of thier music...
I really think that it is ridiculous that Robotic Demolition had to TRY and make a point by getting so called fans to write in thier own review on you. This is highly bias, and looks realy unproffesional of you. Megan, may have a certain taste in music, i dont know what her favourite music is, and to be perfectly honest, i dont realy mind either. However, her job is to write an unbias acount of how the the night went down for all of the bands.
Getting fans to write in is childish and pathetic. Lets be honest here. If they were true fans, they surely wouldent need to be asked to write in, they should do it of thier own back. I think we have a case of close friends, then actual fans here. Im not saying you dont have fans, im just saying it seems like your begging for love.
I think you should just except the review as it is and work with it, and reading the comments above im sure that you have excepted this.
Ii also agree with Frank here. Megan, you do not need to justify yourself at all. These bands just need to learn how to take it on the chin...Christ i know.
..
I play in Iosist, and **** me have we played to some tough crowds. Our music is not what you would call...crowd pleasing, its a love hate relationship...and yes there have been times where we have played to a crowd that only appreciate on certain genre..It can be hard, but its something that every band has to deal with at one stage or another. In the End, playing to a dead crowd will only make you stronger...
I really dont want to insult anyone here, but i dont think anyone should judge themeselves against the flamming monkeys...
Yea, they maybe big with the local crowd at Rockstock...but in my personal opinion, i dont think the band will go far. They play songs that have the same structure and chord sequences as every other Rock band out there, it gets boring. The only thing they have on thier side at the moment is Some young pretty boy looks (but lets face it, they will one day hit puberty), and money. Technically, they arnt that great. No ofeence Jimmy, but you sold out mate, you was better of in Xenon.
Hope all the bands here reach thier potensial, and keep up the hard work, no matter your style.
Take care

Hey,
Thanks to everyone who came and made it a great night for me - probably my best Rockstock so far actually :]
I've been reading over all the comments and just say a few things about people's comments and reactions to the gig.
Anyone, and any band willing to get up on a stage and perform has to have quite a lot of balls to do so. I've got a distict advantage because I've been doing it for a while and don't find it so intimidating, but back when I started I found it really difficult. Robotic Demolition were playing their first show [if I remember correctly]. Not one person should be putting them in a position where they have to defend themselves against being slated by malicious comments on a very fair, factual and unbiased review.
I understand that it's probably not my place to get much more involved, but people need to think about how much work goes into doing a gig, despite how unprepared it may seem on the night.
Everyone starts somewhere. The worst thing you can do is knock someone down before they've even started gigging properly.
I wish all the bands the best of luck and hope to see them at a gig again in the future.
xx

Hey, Thanks to everyone who came and made it a great night for me - probably my best Rockstock so far actually :] I've been reading over all the comments and just say a few things about people's comments and reactions to the gig. Anyone, and any band willing to get up on a stage and perform has to have quite a lot of balls to do so. I've got a distict advantage because I've been doing it for a while and don't find it so intimidating, but back when I started I found it really difficult. Robotic Demolition were playing their first show . I wish all the bands the best of luck and hope to see them at a gig again in the future. xx
I totally agree with your opinion :D
