Skip McDonald has been one of the hardest working musicians of the last 20 years, from being behind some of the earliest ever rap hits to pioneering the blues and dub scene.
Since 1992, he has been the prime mover behind Little Axe, the name he will be playing under at Croydon Clocktower on Friday.
Little Axe represented a return to his roots in blues music after a long period on the rap scene when he formed the house band for pioneering label Sugar Hill and provided music for some of the most seminal records of the 1970s and '80s by Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa and Force M.D.'s.
Little Axe's first album, The Wolf That House Built, mixed blues and dub and was released to critical acclaim in 1994.
It has since been followed up with Slow Fuse, Hard Grind and Champagne & Grits.
He will supported at the Clocktower by The Cedars, a UK-based alt-Americana quartet who include slide guitar and banjo in their songs that straddle the divide between the dance halls of the 1920's and what's going on in the scene right now.
Skip 'Little Axe' McDonald and The Cedars, Croydon Clocktower, Katharine Street, February 5, 8pm, £6. Call 020 8253 1030 or visit croydonclocktower.org.uk.
