A campaign to crack down on the abuse of workers in "sweatshops" has been boosted thanks to a whopping £71,000 donation.

Workers Beer Company - owned by Battersea and Wandsworth Trades Union Council - made the contribution to the War on Want campaign for workers’ rights exactly 12 months to the day from the start of the London 2012 Olympics.

War on Want aims to raise awareness about the rights of workers in the supply chains of sportswear firms involved in the 2012 Games.

The borough-based company raised the cash at this year's world-famous Glastonbury festival - and its founder Michael Eavis agreed to formally hand it over to the campaign on Wednesday, July 27.

He said: "The only sweat we want to see at the 2012 London Olympics should come from the athletes. The abuse of workers in sweatshops runs totally counter to the Olympic ideal of fairness, and no companies found guilty of such abuse should be part of the Games."
