Purley session singer set to release Serious Cabaret

Your Local Guardian: Mary Carewe Mary Carewe

You may not know it but with a CV that includes movie soundtracks, TV backing tracks and even the instantly recognisable AutoGlass jingle it is a certainly of life you will have listened to Mary Carewe.

The 45-year-old mother of two joined stage school wanting to be a dancer but quickly discovered it was singing that her talents lay.

What followed for the Purley based singer has been a 30-year-career moving from being a backing vocalist to take the spotlight as one of the UK’s top session singers.

She says: "I never went through the traditional route of being a classical singer. After stage school is started out as a backing singer but was quickly identified to take solo parts and it snowballed from there."

Soloist film credits include Brideshead Revisited, Alfie, Mona Lisa smiles, The Understudy, Sweeney Todd, A Good Year, Alien vs Predator, The Sleeping Dictionary, As You like It and 1984.

On top of that is singing in TV shows such as Waking the Dead, French and Saunders Land Girls and Benidorm and then of course come the advert jingles.

She says: "People will probably actually know my voice from the Autocar Repair Autocar Replace jingle. I can’t even remember when I did it, but it has been around for a long time. My kids can’t stand it."

Working with Australian-born, Berlin-based Philip Mayers, Carewe is set to release a CD of 20th century classics, spanning almost the entire century.

Tunes such as Diamonds are Forever, Poor Little Rich Girl and At The Last Lousy Moments Of Love have been woven together by the pair in to a compilation entitled Serious Cabaret.

She says: "Philip and I have worked together on and off for 15 years. When it is just two musicians you can really hear the chemistry between us."

With the pair battling to fit in sessions around their busy schedules, alongside the issue of finding a middle ground between South London and Germany the pair took more than five years to complete the CD but hope to begin promoting later this year.

She says: "Hopefully I can find somewhere to play locally, it is about finding the right venue."

Serious Cabaret is out on Amazon now.
