REVIEW: The Joy Formidable - Shoreditch

An obsolete factory in Shoreditch provided the venue for The Joy Formidable's exclusive gig, organised by Clarks Originals Live.

I was greeted by a bouncer on the door. It all felt very secretive, with the chosen venue only being announced to fans 48 hours beforehand.

About 150 people were invited to the top secret performance played by the welsh trio, ahead of the tour of the USA and new album release.

Fans were treated to an intimate acoustic set on arrival. Ritzy, Rhydian and Matt played three previously unheard tracks in the setting of a fake campfire. However, it was quite hard to see what they were up to, even for the taller members amongst the crowd.

But quiet, cosy sets are not what The Joy Formidable are all about and the band head to the main stage to thrash out tracks from their 2011 debut album The Big Roar.

Like a woman possessed, wide-eyed Ritzy belts out angsty 'Austere', 'A Heavy Abacus' and 'Endtapes' - which catapulted the band to fame when used in the Twilight film series.

It is clear the band has the skill of creating music fans can relate to, exemplified by the crowd who seem to be completely lost and captivated by the big crescendo finish of ‘Whirring’.

The performance concludes with an energetic encore and a destroyed stage set with symbols crashing onto the stage. Overall, they pull off a convincing performance, and it felt really special to be invited along to the secret gig.

Before they leave, Ritzy announces The Joy Formidable won't be performing in the UK for a while as they prepare the new album - name to be confirmed. It will be exciting to watch to see how they will grow.
