Almost four years to the day since Jean Charles de Menezes was killed by the Metropolitan Police, a new play pieces together his final minutes using the testaments of witnesses at the inquest into his death.

Stockwell: The Inquest into the Death of Jean Charles de Menezes opens on Tuesday at the Landor Theatre, just yards from where the innocent Brazilian was gunned down as a suspected terrorist.

It is the second collaboration between creator Kieron Brady and director Sophie Lifschutz after 2007's Deepcut: Scenes From An Inquiry, and though you might expect the play to be somewhat controversial, Lifschutz claims otherwise.

"The whole subject is controversial but I don't know if they play is," she says.

"What Kieron has done is take everything from the court testaments at the inquest last year and edited it together to create this piece of drama.

"It's all based on the real words from the inquest and has conflicts sitting side by side as a lot of the statements are conflicting, with people thinking they heard something and others thinking they heard something else.

"We are really trying to be balanced and have a measured approach and because it's the words of the witnesses it is not opinionated.

"It retells the story of that morning, the 33 minutes from the time Jean Charles left his house to the moment he was killed and is interspersed with scenes from the court room."

Lifschutz, who was living in Berlin at the time of the shooting and the London bombings, believes staging the play so close to the event is an important factor.

"I think it's quite powerful to have it there," she says.

"It brings the story home to everyone who uses that station every day to commute to work."
